    Decision support system for vendor managed inventory supply chain:a case study

    Vendor-managed inventory (VMI) is a widely used collaborative inventory management policy in which manufacturers manages the inventory of retailers and takes responsibility for making decisions related to the timing and extent of inventory replenishment. VMI partnerships help organisations to reduce demand variability, inventory holding and distribution costs. This study provides empirical evidence that significant economic benefits can be achieved with the use of a genetic algorithm (GA)-based decision support system (DSS) in a VMI supply chain. A two-stage serial supply chain in which retailers and their supplier are operating VMI in an uncertain demand environment is studied. Performance was measured in terms of cost, profit, stockouts and service levels. The results generated from GA-based model were compared to traditional alternatives. The study found that the GA-based approach outperformed traditional methods and its use can be economically justified in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

The management of the supply chain and the roles of various actors involved differ from industry to industry and company to company. As a result Supply Chain Management (SCM) has become a vital issue for manufacturers, professionals and researchers. It is felt that to manage the supply chain effectively entire structure of supply chain must be understood properly. This paper attempts to provide the reader a complete picture of supply chain management through a systematic literature review. It presents a state of art on SCM by systematically arranging main activities in supply chain.     Economic ordering quantity is a commonly accepted inventory management model. Its variant economic production quantity (EPQ) model is also a widely researched inventory model. The number of researchers had developed the EPQ model by considering different parameters, such as shortage, backorder, setup cost, deterioration, constant or linear or power form of the demand, rework, scrap, inspection, machine breakdown, etc. The objective of this paper is to review the literature, identify the gap in literature, develop and expand the knowledge base regarding EPQ models.     In India, the population of about eight lacks people who are engaged in riding cycle rickshaw as an occupation. It is an unorganized sector of India. A cycle rickshaw is a modified form of bicycle which is the cheapest mode of transportation for carrying passengers, luggage and goods. Many tasks connected with this occupation are associated with strenuous body postures, and some body movements typical for this job which, when combined with a heavy load, result in frequent work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs).Working postures were analyzed by means of Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) tool and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) tool in order to determine the area of discomfort. The outcome of the research is beneficial for manufactures of cycle rickshaws and similar products well as users of such products, including cycle rickshaw operators. Some suggestions were given to have increase the comfort and safety level

    An evaluation of vendor managed inventory practices from small and medium indian enterprises

    Vendor managed inventory has proven to be an effective tool for improving the supply chain performance by decreasing inventory-related costs and increasing customer service. It is quite evident from the literature that vendor managed inventory (VMI) has been successfully implemented in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). However, studies related to the implementation of VMI in Indian SMEs are very limited. Therefore, this study presents an empirical investigation of VMI practices in Indian SMEs using survey methodology. The paper evaluates the benefits, barriers, and effects of adopting VMI in Indian SMEs, and also investigates the IT tools and software used for VMI adoption. Furthermore, this study explores the dissimilarities among various sectors of SMEs adopting VMI. Based on the proposed methodology, it is found that organizational issues and unwillingness to share information are the major barriers. In terms of benefits, the major influencing variables are improved efficiency and improved channel relations
